The finale that had everyone screaming "It's about damn time!!!" I'm pleased as punch that episode 106 finally delivered what the show had been promising since its first promo, but I'm pissed because It could be too late. If there was no "The Walking Dead", this show would have been a stand alone smash without the shadow of a doubt., but you can't follow up an act like that and come half assed with it. No, no, no. Let's now discuss the hits and misses of this kick ass finale and speculate on where the show is going next season. Salazar Brings the PainThis episode kills it from the word Go, when our favorite torturer strolls on to the make-shift military base with the Manawa family and about 6,000 of their closet friends. (Walkers from the sports arena) They use the walkers as a diversion to keep the army busy while they bust in to rescue Nick and Griselda. I felt two ways about this part because You just know that this is the worse laid plan in the history of planning things. Those walkers could have eaten him if he as much as tripped on a crack in the street they were so close, but I ignored the pretzel logic because I was so damned happy to see the horde. I was actually cheering. How is that for audience manipulation. As I said in earlier blogs, Daniel Salazar is shaping up to be one of my favorite characters because of his shady layered darkness and unapologetic style of getting the job done. The Dynamic DuoNick and Strand are the zompoc equivalent of Batman and the Boy Wonder. Strand stands out as clear and in control of most situations. A slick talking grafter who could sell ice to an Eskimo, but it becomes clear in this instalment that Nick can hold his own along side the tycoon, as he lifted the key to the cell from Strand's pocket earlier on without his Knowledge. As they make their escape they rely heavily on each other for survival., and Strand's truly callus nature becomes apparent when he takes his diamond cufflinks back from the suffering soldier. He tells him to "Keep the watch." as a walker devourers his legs. Strand opts not to put him out of his misery. Strand wins for most intriguing character, and I for one, would love it if the writers would surprise me and let him live for the expanse of season 2. Life Bonds & Broken BondsThis was all action and that's what it needed to be, because frankly, based on fan reaction, anything less would have resulted in a failed show. They say "Teamwork makes the dream work" and I have to agree. The bonds that held this family together became unbreakable here. From Chris taking a beating from the carjacker/ soldiers in his stepsisters defense to Madison beating walkers off of Liza. our main characters finally pull their heads out and bond against a common foe. I liked them all a little better for it. Travis finally found his inner Rick when He lost it on the soldier that he'd earlier let go. Salazar had been torturing the soldier for answers to were their loved ones were located all day and I prayed that Travis would do the "Right" thing and let him go when he got the chance. It was a choice that came back to bite him when that same soldier turned up amidst the waylay and shot Ophelia. Travis went ape-shit and beat the guy with in a inch of his life. I think it was in part a feeling of responsibility for letting him go. Speaking of letting go. the bond we lost was Liza. She was a bit of a moral compass and we all know how they end up. True to typical Walking Dead form, the woman who risked her life to help heal the sick was the one to be bit and Travis had to put her down. I'm a emotional person and this scene should have had me in tears, hut I hate to say I just didn't care enough. Sorry. Strand pulled through as a crucial part of the newly minted team by offering them a sanctuary and a shot at survival. Silver lining yes? Hope for the Future"The Abigale" Is the name of Strands vessel and it was insinuated per The Talking Dead the Fear special, that it's not going to be so easy to get to it. It also seems Pirates may become an issue possibly. Going the water route with the story is an interesting angle because it's something a lot of people say they would pursue in a zompoc scenario. It will be fun to see how that plays out, but the only thing I ask is not to spend the whole season on the ocean. It would further take us away from the degradation of society and I think we already missed enough.
I have a ton of hope for the future of this series, if they learn from the mistakes of this season they should be just fine.
